getting there
As part of your promotion strategy you’re probably going to submit your film to a festival or to lots of them. Festivals are popping up all over the place and even if you know your way around the circuit, it’s worthwhile keeping up with where’s new and the latest expansions or shrinkages of the old established ones.
If you’re new to it then it’s also worthwhile getting some insider information from people who’ve been before about the who, where and why of each particular venue and festival.
Dates change. Submission criteria change. And so do costs. Be really careful when planning to which festivals you’re going to submit to if costs are an issue. And although we make every effort to provide accurate information, check the individual website of each film festival to get the latest and most up-to-date news, contacts and so on.
Below is a constantly updated list of short film festivals with details of deadlines. It’s organized chronologically by month of the opening of acceptance of film submissions. The period for submissions varies so make sure you don’t miss the deadlines. And balance the investment of submission charges against the expected returns if your film sells.
So, scan, check, click and tick. Then submit.
being there
If you’re planning on going to a festival get in early with flights/transport and accommodation. You don’t want to be the big hit of the festival and sneaking off to your tent late at night. Check out the various screen agencies and other public bodies like the UK Film Council to see if you can apply for financial support connected with submitting to festivals. Check propeller4film’s own film funding pages for help and information as well. Often the film festivals offer grants and bursaries, so check each website.
